USAI realize that this is dangerous territory because every Vietnamese person has her favorite Banh Mi place and thinks all others are terrible. But I would say that I am pretty open minded about Banh Mi, and this is my favorite. The bread is just light enough that it supports rather than overwhelms the sandwich (never use artisanal breads for Banh Mi!), the veggies are also pickled just right, and the filler amount is right, and the same is true for the meat.comparison, the pork banh-mi sandwich at Bi-rite (a place I usually love) is too artisinal--the pork is flavorless, carved too thin, and stringy with fat. At Bun Mee, the pork is done just right and after you eat the sandwich, you want a little more. You don't feel sick or in need of a shower to de-grease. I've had Tenderloin Banh Mi's as well, and while the bread there is authentic, the meat fillers are pretty sad (I'm guessing the price is right for that area). Bun Mee is the perfect in-between.

USAI love Russian Hill, and Bun Mee is just another reason why I KNOW I could live in this neighborhood and never want to leave. My friend and I hopped in for a "snack" as we toured the neighborhood's watering holes and eateries. I first heard about Bun Mee on "Unique Eats" (Cooking Channel), and it lived up to the hype. We were thinking traditional, and opted for the pork belly, a.k.a. the Belly Bun. Can I get an 'Amen' for the pork belly? I experienced a rebirth after biting into this sandwich. There are certain meals that host killer flavor thanks to quality ingredients, but we are talking several degrees above killer status. For a newby, you will find the intense richness of the pork so satisfying that you will feel like you just cheated on your favorite eatery. It is sinfully delicious. There is the crunch of the pickled carrot and daikon, the salty goodness of the radish relish, cool cucumber, and my favorite herb on the entire planet, cilantro! I am never one to think "sandwich" when I'm really hungry, but a Belly Bun--and probabaly any of the other sandwiches on the menu--would make me a convert.
